Beginning in the early 1960's the Diana
camera was manufactured by The Great Wall
Plastic Factory of Kowloon, Hong Kong. In the
United States the camera was sold by the
twelve dozen and cost three dollars per
camera. The single shutter speed varies from
about 1/30 to 1/200 of a second, depending on
the individual camera. The camera makes 16
exposures of about 4x4cm per roll of 120
film.
The Diana cameras possess many
characteristics usually thought of as flaws.
The cameras have optical distortions, light
leaks, low contrast from the plastic lens,
barrel distortion, chromatic aberration often
resulting in unique, sometimes beautiful
soft-focus, dreamy images.
The Diana has become a collectors item
selling for as much as $100 dollars at
auction on ebay. The camera has a certain
liberating effect allowing the photographer
to see past the equipment.
